Antipodes and involutions

If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi’s formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellationfree formulas. We apply this idea to the Hopf algebras of polynomials, graphs, and noncommutative symmetric functions.

Projective Modules and Involutions

Let G be a finite group, and let Ω := {t ∈ G | t = 1}. Then Ω is a G-set under conjugation. Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2. It is shown that each projective indecomposable summand of the G-permutation module kΩ is irreducible and self-dual, whence it belongs to a real 2-block of defect zero. This, together with the fact that each irreducible kG-module that belongs to...

Pfister Involutions

The question of the existence of an analogue, in the framework of central simple algebras with involution, of the notion of Pfister form is raised. In particular, algebras with orthogonal involution which split as a tensor product of quaternion algebras with involution are studied. It is proven that, up to degree 16, over any extension over which the algebra splits, the involution is adjoint to...

Square Involutions

A square involution is a square permutation which is also an involution. In this paper we give the enumeration of square involutions, using purely combinatorial methods, by establishing a bijective correspondence with a class of lattice paths. As a corollary to our result, we enumerate various subclasses of square involutions, including the classes of triangular, decomposable, and fat involutions.
